“The Bone Sparrow” is an amazing story. Subhi, a 10-year-old refugee from Burma, was born in the refugee camp he and his family and friends live in. In this camp, they have a hard life: poor living conditions, sickness, and the threat of the Jackets that guard their camp. But at night, Subhi can hear the songs of the creatures of the Night Sea from his mother’s stories. Jimmie is a young girl who lives close to the refugee camp. One night, she sneaks out to see the camp, and the two meet. Jimmie brings her mother’s notebook of stories, and because she can’t read them herself, she asks Subhi to tell them to her. The two form a friendship, even though things are difficult for both of them. Tragedy after tragedy strike, and yet Subhi and Jimmie manage to stay strong.
This book will make you feel so many things, but Subhi and Jimmie’s story will remain with you forever. I loved this book, and I think you will too.
