Generations of Fowls have lived on the wrong side of the law, creating a massive fortune. Having lost a billionaire status along with his father, Artemis Fowl II is prepared to recover what money the family has lost. How does he plan to do this? By acquiring fairy gold, of course! Artemis is always ahead of the game, but this latest venture may be tougher than he expected.
I have yet to read a book that combines relatively modern technology with classic fairy lore as Artemis Fowl does. In most fiction, there’s either one or the other. You do lose some of the mysticism of the fairies in this book, especially because parts of the story are told from their point of view. However, many aspects weren’t overshadowed by technology, like the Book, Ritual, and laws the fairies had to obey. Reading this the first time had me skeptical about whether combining fairies and technology would work. After all, the two are based on very different principles. Eoin Colfer does a fantastic job of combining them, though. I found this perfect mix of true magic, technology, and fairy exasperation with humankind. If you’re stuck in a reading slump and want a book that is fast-paced and has just the right touch of humor, this is your book.
